An 1860's farmhouse. A small cape in a retirement community. A two story colonial. These are all examples of existing homes that have been upgraded to include a central vacuum system.
The most ideal scenario is if your home has a basement with an unfinished ceiling. Pipes are run through the basement ceiling up into a 1st floor wall cavity where the inlet is installed. Asides from a small pilot hole (think the diameter of a wire coat hanger) drilled in the floor, there are no other holes placed in the wall or floor to patch up.
If there is a second story, I look for closets stacked on the 1st and 2nd floors to run the pipe through. Obviously not every house will have this ideal setup so I look for pipe chases, utility rooms, etc in order to get the pipe to the second floor.
